Jasmine's 2014 Review
I currently present Norwich Today and World Cultures on Future Radio. Norwich Today is our weekday lunchtime magazine show, and World Cultures is a specialised music show.
They are two very different shows but involve two of my favourite things – talking and music!
I have a pretty extensive and eclectic (does anyone even use that word anymore?) collection of world music varying from Nigerian hip hop and Malian rock, to Brazilian electronica and Australian Bollywood style surf-rock. When you tune in on a Sunday evening expect the unexpected!
This coming year there are already several world music gigs I am looking forward to, with Dub Colossus and Ibibio Sound Machine coming to Norwich Arts Centre early in 2015.
We are lucky in Norwich to have some great gig venues and we are often on tour lists of some very good albeit unusual bands. Long may it continue, I say. Over the last year we have seen local elections and elections for the European Parliament, and I organised an ‘Election Special’ edition of Norwich Today interviewing candidates from the main political parties.
Looking ahead to 2015 I’m very much looking forward to being involved in more election coverage with the General Election looming in May – expect to hear some in depth interviews with candidates for local council and Parliament too.
One of the great things about Future Radio is that it is a community radio station and we cover community issues and local topics. Electing your MP and choosing your local councillor can be difficult, especially when you only hear about central government on the national news, so Future Radio’s election coverage provides the opportunity to hear directly from the local candidates themselves and explore local issues.
2014 has been a busy year for Future Radio with lots of changes – we said goodbye to Terry Lee, our Station Manager earlier in the year. Quite sad for many of us who had known him for a long time – he was involved in Future Radio from the very beginning, when we were broadcasting on twenty-eight day licenses.
But we waved him on to pastures new and welcomed Daniele Fisichella as our new Station Manager. And we have just launched a fantastic new website!
It’s at the same web address but has loads of great new interactive features. Seasons Greetings and see you in 2015!
Jasmine Marie is a volunteer and presents Norwich Today on Friday (12-2pm) and World Cultures on Sunday (6-8pm)
