Today's Chance Music is a celebration of Sufi music. Sufism is the mystical aspect of Islam and its origins and beliefs are surrounded by mystery. The name Sufi is thought to come from the Arabic word for wool which is suf, because the first Sufis wore white woolen robes. Sufism also crosses religious boundaries in its search for a higher level of existence. The term Sufi is used to describe a wide range of people who question prevailing social norms and who place greater emphasis on love than formal religion and material possessions.

B, thanks for the feedback. As you know the podcasts are all about 'Chance Music'. I was concerned that an hour of traditional Sufi music may have been too long a listen and was keen to expose both the traditional and contemporary takes.

Relistening to the podcast I think that the Mercan Dede tracks were perhaps not his best for the context (although timing was a factor in the choice), and playing them first may have been off-putting.

But if this programme introduced just one listener to the Titi Robin and Faiz Ali Faiz disc it would have been worthwhile.

Dear Bob,

I think your podcasts are a real treat and your website is absolutely brill. But-and I hope you don't mind me saying this-I thought this particular podcast was very disappointing. Nothing gripped me (except the one traditional track). The 'fusion' or contemporary stuff just didn't come off. I wish you had played an hour of traditional music (Nusrat's Shabaz Qalander, for example, is so much better, no?).

Keep well,

b.
