Chance Music 07 11 10

By Bob Shingleton - Posted on 07 November 2010

This Chance Music homage to Catalonia is built around the music of the legendary Catalan cellist Pablo Casals. The centrepiece is a performance of Bach's Fifth Brandenburg Concerto with Casals conducting recorded in Perpignan in 1950 and the programme opens and closes with Casals' own compositions. Catholic monk and mystic Thomas Merton, who was born in Catalonia, is represented by an arrangement of one of his poems by American folklorist John Jacob Niles. Catalonia's connection with the Cathar heresy is celebrated in an excerpt from the Catalan early musician Jordi Savall's The Forgotten Kingdom project and Savall's son Ferran contributes a traditional Catalan folk song.
